LEADERSHIP

MENTORING

Distance, Perspective and Judgement

Man writing 1 B&W.jpg

How to maintain perspective when priorities shift, expectations collide and decisions cannot wait for perfect information?

Priorities shift. New information emerges. Different stakeholders can experience the same situation in very different ways. Performance concerns, customer expectations, organisational change and day-to-day operational demands can all require attention at the same time.

In moments like these, the most apparent answer can easily become the starting point too quickly. Mentoring creates enough distance to examine what is shaping the situation, which interpretation is most useful and where attention, energy and action will have the greatest effect.

How the mentoring works

Mentoring combines structured reflection with practical discussion around real situations, decisions and challenges.

The conversation extends beyond the immediate issue to examine the assumptions, interpretations, mental models, stakeholder interests and time horizons that may be shaping the situation. This creates opportunities to test alternative perspectives, determine which lenses are most useful and decide which responses are most proportionate to the reality at hand.

The result is development that remains grounded in operational reality while strengthening the capacity to navigate complexity with greater clarity, perspective and confidence.

Start a conversation...

Some situations are difficult to resolve from inside the flow of daily activity. Priorities compete, familiar challenges return in different forms and the next step is not always immediately obvious.

A conversation can help create enough distance to examine whether the most apparent explanation is already defining the route. Once a route is chosen, time, energy and decisions often begin to reinforce it, even when only part of the situation has been understood.
